We touched down at LAS and as I was literally saying goodbye B Hill and the road crew I was saying hello to Shannon Gibson and the CX team for the year. It was quickly off to the Hotel to get cleaned up and then meeting up with the rest of the NoTubes family that was in town for the trade show.
After making a couple of quick appearances at the show on Wed morning I was off to the Dessert Breeze Soccer complex for what promised to be the biggest and best CrossVegas ever. Brook Watts has done a great job in creating what is correctly touted as the biggest cross race in the US and it takes place in the dessert…in September. This year rendition was highlighted by massive european talent in Sven Niys (current world champion), Bart Wellens and many more. The course had some added excitement as well. There were now two flyovers, and a man made berm that would set you up for some big speed coming into the 1st of 4barrier sections.
I managed to get out to a mediocre/poor start and began to move forward. My legs were feeling good, and I was making up some decent amount of ground on the power sections. I felt like this was a good sign considering this was truly the first ride on the new XFire Team bikes for this season. I was able to move up to 29th or 30th and was comfortably sitting in a group biding my time to move forward, when I got hit from behind while going over the barriers. The bump was enough to cause me to stumble, dropping my chain and
stepping on my rear wheel unknowingly breaking a spoke. I scrambled to get on the back of the group, but lost contact after having to go into the pits. I probably moved back to somewhere in the 40’s. Once I was on the new bike I tried to calm myself and regain the chase of moving thru the field. In the end I was only able to get back up to 30th place, but I know that I have the fitness and ability to have finished higher, but that’s racing.
After the race we packed up bikes and grabbed some dinner (chinese food ironically enough). By the time Kenny and I got back to the hotel, got showered and bags packed we were able to squeeze in an hour long power nap before a 4 a.m. wakeup call to catch a 6 a.m. flight to SFO. Then it was off to Beijing, China.
